We survived JOTA 2009! Overall I think it was a success from the Museum location. With over 400 scouts and others coming to the museum throughout the day, there was never a dull moment. Kudos to Keith Pugh and his helpers for the outstanding work they did throughout the day. Thanks to the many volunteers who came out and helped for set-up, operation and tear-down. It could never happen without you.

Deepest thanks to the BSA and Museum staff for allowing us to invade their space and have the freedom to do what we needed to in order to make it all come together. My hope is that at least a few Scouts and leaders came away with a positive impression of Amateur Radio and the fun it can be. Irving ARC Supports Irving Independence Day Parade IARC Inc.'s communications participation in the Irving 4th July parade another successful event of communications. Approx 110 entries . Participates in a Successful Field
Day Twenty-six Irving
Amateur Radio Club members and
twelve visitors participated in the
Amateur Radio Relay League’s Field
Day.
Operations were set up at
Running Bear Park and ran
throughout the day, overnight, and
into the next morning. Amateur
Radio Operators made two hundred
eighty-eight contacts via voice
radio, CW, and digital means. Also of interest
was the City of Irving’s Emergency
Command Vehicle, which was
displayed Saturday afternoon.

Irving ARC Announces New Officers & Directors
The Irving Amateur Radio Club, Inc. announces its incoming officers and directors elected at the March 25, 2010 general meeting.
Elected by acclamation were: President-Dennis Riise, K5AVT, Vice President-James Shugart N5BKL, Secretary–Coleta Taylor KD5QFH, Treasurer–Chris Shanahan KE5KPC, Director Term 2010-Ray McCoy N5CGS, Director Term 2010-James Comer KB5FVS, and Director Term 2010-2011-Bob Alexander W5AH.
These officers and directors join existing director Tom Schuessler, N5HYP to lead the Irving Amateur Radio Club, Inc.Newly elected officers and board members were installed at the April 2nd general meeting. Irving ARC Supports Grasslands Run
The Irving Amateur Radio Club provided logistical and emergency communications support to the Grassland Run, held March 21, 2009.
Sixteen amateur radio operators served as net control operators, a shadow operator for the run director, and at rest stops. Net control coordinated with the supply vehicles by FRS radio.

8th Annual Irving Hamfest Is A Success
Attendance for 2010 exceeded last year's and a variety of vendors and tables provided just what you were looking for.
The Hamfest expanded the number of prizes from two to four and changed the number of drawings from one to four. This year's prizes included a Kenwood TM V71A mobile radio, a TH F6A dual band hand held radio, and two TH K2AT 2-meter hand held radios.

IARC Participates in North American QSO Party
Tom Schuessler N5HYP and Doyle Taylor AD5KE from the Irving Amateur Radio Club participated in the North American QSO Party on January 17, 2009.
It was an excellent warm-up for field day. The QSO Party was a short duration event that imposes an 100 watt power limit for all station. Members participated from the IARC ham shack, located at the Betcha Bingo Hall #2 and made 10 contacts.

Another fun night of fellowship to celebrate the holiday season was held on December 17, 2009. Thirty-five people attended representing new and long-time members, family, and friends. There is always a variety of good food at the Golden Corral.
Tom Schuessler N5HYP began the dinner with the prayer. Ray McCoy N5CGS led the pledge of allegience.
Members, family and friends gave their names and call signs then told what they liked most about the hobby of Amateur Radio.

The White Elephant gift exchange is always a fun time . Gifts included copper wire, tape measure, fox hunt antenna, cards, head set, candles, knife set, and alligator clips.
Those that were unable to attend, we missed you and you missed a very good gathering of friends, family and all the good food.

The IARC, in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, Rising Star District, put on a Radio Merit Badge class for the annual Merit Badge College. The event was held at Plymouth Park Methodist Church on December 13th. 6 club members headed by Tom Schuessler, N5HYP, along with Dennis Riise, K5AVT, Vern Kilburn, KE5HXT, Chris Shanahan, KE5KPC, James Shugart, N5BKL and Bill Byrom, N5BB led 5 Scouts in a day of learning and exploring what Ham Radio is all about. This was the first attempt by the club to put on such a class and it was a good learning experience for all.
The morning was spent explaining many fundamental principles of radio in general and Ham Radio in particular while the afternoon was used in making on the air contacts. Tom had built up a rather extensive PowerPoint presentation that followed the requirements of the Radio Merit Badge and Bill Byrom brought along a spectrum analyzer and demonstrated how the concept of modulation works.
For the on-air contacts, one of the club’s TS 480SAT’s and the Outbacker antenna were set up for HF and Chris brought a portable VHF/UHF radio and setup. Tom had set up in advance, IRLP contacts from other countries but due to failure on the local node that did not happen so local VHF and stateside HF contacts had to suffice.
3 of the 5 Scouts were able to stay the entire time and make the necessary 10 minute on-air contact and thus had their “Blue Card” signed allowing them to pick up a new merit badge.
Teaching the class was a challenging event as at one of these events, there is a finite amount of time to convey the information in the requirements in such a way that it is understandable and meaningful to the Scouts, who have probably had no real experience with Ham Radio up until this point.
